So what is Friday Night Funkin', exactly?
It's a rhythm game with a love story bolted on. You're Boyfriend. You'd like to date Girlfriend. Standing in your way is a queue of bosses, and the only accepted method of getting past them is to out-rap them. Arrows scroll up the screen in time with the music, you hit the matching arrow key as each one lands, and if you miss too many your health bar empties and that's your evening. It is ridiculously simple, and it is brilliant.
The original game has a Story mode and a Free play mode, and both come with a tutorial. Take it. Your fingers are about to learn humility.
How to play FNF
The arrow keys hit the notes and Enter confirms things in the menus. Esc pauses the song in a lot of the mods, and a few, like FNF: Incident (Vs. Mr. Trololo), will also take WASD, which is handy if your right hand is busy with a snack.
The FNF mods worth playing
Most of what's here is fan-made, which is what happens when a game this simple gets a fanbase this big. These are the ones people keep coming back to:
- FNF vs Whitty gives you a full week against a man whose head is, and there's no gentle way to say this, a bomb. It gets properly nasty in the final tracks.
- FNF vs Sonic.exe turns Sonic the Hedgehog into the creepypasta villain Sonic.exe and makes you rap at him. It's billed as a horror mod, and it isn't kidding.
- FNF vs Kapi is a showdown with Kapi, a cat who loves to dance, which sounds adorable right up until the songs start getting harder.
- FNF: QT Mod brings new songs and a story built around QT, a robot girl with a mysterious past.
- FNF vs Hatsune Miku puts the Vocaloid virtual singer on the other microphone.
- FNF vs Impostor drags Among Us into the booth, with songs like Sussus Moogus, Sabotage and Meltdown.
- FNF: Smoke 'Em Out Struggle (Vs. Garcello) is four songs against Garcello, called Headache, Nerves, Release and Fading.
More ways to play FNF
Friday Night Funkin': 2 Players splits the screen in two so you can battle a friend, which is the fastest known way to end a friendship. FNF Character Test Playground drops the score altogether: pick a character and play through their animations and sounds with nobody judging your timing. And on a phone, Friday Night Funkin': Foned In is the version made for touch screens, where you tap the arrows on the screen instead.
