Poker requires many different skills to excel at, but the most important ones if you’re aiming to become a consistent player are patience and discipline. Don’t call every Big Blind to see the flop if your hand is garbage because, across dozens of rounds, this will eat up your stack.

You must strike a delicate balance of being calculating yet not overly passive. The easiest player to defeat is the one who never bets or raises but only checks and calls. Bluff a bit to feel out the table, win a couple of small pots to let the opponents know you mean business.

To maximize your earnings, you must learn not to overplay a great hand. Control the excitement and don’t make big bets right off the bat, but slowly squeeze the money out of your opponents’ pockets. It’s also essential not to get carried away and back away to control the losses once your bluff is called.
